One day, Daye was cleaning out her late grandfather’s belongings when she came across a bright red envelope. Written on the front were the words, “To my granddaugther.” Recognizing her grandfather’s handwriting, she opened the envelope. A letter inside read:

Dear Daye,

Years ago you came to me for help. You said, “Lolo Pitong, how is it that you’ve accomplished so much in your life? You’re still full of energy, and I’m already tired of struggling. How can I get that same enthusiasm that you’ve got?”

I didn’t know what to say to you then. But knowing my days are numbered, I figure that I owe you an answer.

So here is what I believe. I think a lot of it has to do with how a person looks at things. I call it ‘keeping your eyes wide open.’ First, realize that life is filled with surprises, but many are good ones. If you don’t keep watching for them, you’ll miss half the excitement.

Expect to be thrilled once in a while, and you will be. When you meet up with challenges, welcome them. They’ll leave you wiser, stronger, and more capable than you were the day before.

When you make a mistake, be grateful for the things it taught you. Resolve to use that lesson to help you reach your goals.

And follow the rules. Even the little ones. When you follow the rules, life works. If you think you ever really get by with breaking the rules, you’re only fooling yourself. It’s also important to decide exactly what you want.

Then keep your mind focused on it, and be prepared to receive it. But be ready to end up in some new places too. As you grow with the years, you’ll be given bigger shoes to fill. So be ready for endings as well as challenging beginnings.

Sometimes we have to be brave enough to move from the familiar to the unfamiliar.  Life isn’t just reaching peaks. Part of it is moving from one peak to the next. If you rest too long in between, you might be tempted to quit.

Leave the past in the past. Climb the next mountain and enjoy the view. Dump things that weigh you down emotionally and spiritually.

When an old resentment, belief, or attitude becomes heavy, lighten your load. Shed those hurtful attitudes that slow you down and drain your energy.

Remember that your choices will create your successes and your failures. So consider all the pathways ahead, and decide which ones to follow. Then believe in yourself, get up, and get going.

And be sure to take breaks once in a while. They’ll give you a renewed commitment to your dreams and a cheerful, healthy perception of the things that matter the most to you.

Most important of all, never give up on yourself. The person that ends up a winner is the one who resolves to win. Give life everything you’ve got, and life will give its best back to you.

Love always,

Lolo Pitong

6. katie - November 24, 2007

i have always been a fanatic of stories like this which actually lead you to become better as it encourages you to do things in a much rational way… life is a matter of perspective…like lolo pitong natutunan ko sa dame ng dumating sa aking buhay bagamat hindi ko man hawak ang mangyayari kinabukasan i still have the prerogative to actually do something sa kasalukuyan… luckier pa nga kase i can always turn back in my past,, reconcile…change it….para hindi neto m-screwed ung present…all i know about life is….its all about fate..its alla bout believin that every dream would happen and you as a person has the capacity to chase it no matter what life brings…

7. clemente - November 24, 2007

….hmmm…i was really inspired with this story..’coz in a way it shows the reality, i admit, there were times that i wanna give up,however this story taught me not to surrender, ‘coz in one way or another i’m gonna missed half of my life, so, perceived everything even opportunities and problems that comes your way…and let them serve as sharpener which later on will make you a better one…

lolo Pitong’s advices were signs that he already faced a lot of life-experiences. kaya mga bata dapat makinig sa mas nakatatanda dahil mas marami na silang pinagdaanan kaya mas madami na slang alam… -enjoy life to its fullest!!!

“never give up on yourself. The person that ends up a winner is the one who resolves to win. Give life everything you’ve got, and life will give its best back to you”.

>what a wonderful quotation,it inspired me….life must go on and face your fear “thats the spirit”

13. PJ - November 24, 2007

For me lolo pitong is the kind of lolo that i would like to g grow up with me, i too would like to share a story of my lolo. Frankly saying i never liked my lolo the father of my mother all the time for as long as i can remember he was always grumpy and i thought of him as a dictator while my loving lolo in my fathers side was pretty much his opposite some say im spoiled by him his name is lolo julian. he died when i was in grade 6 i really cried for him it hurts me so much to think that he may not see me held my 1st girlfriends hands, or see in my highschool graduation, and what really pains me is that when people says that i looked like my lolo especially his nose i always tell them I’m not and always irritated by them. But now that he is gone I realized his worth in my character because if he were alive he would always say “apo kaya mo yan wag akang sumuko alalahanin mo na ang mundo ay patuloy lang sa pagikot” these words were all thats left of me in his loving memory. This story of ate daye made me think of him sorry for the long comment and thank you also.

14. daisy j.n. bpag 3-1 - November 24, 2007

wow!!!!
nakakatouch naman…sna naranasan ko din makareceive ng ganitong pamana sa lolo ko…
at tama nga naman si lolo…All things he wrote in that letter was so inspiring.. mga bagay na dapat nga namang tandaan if you want success.. leave what is not useful and carry those things that could help you in your way to success…
ang pamana ni lolo ay dapat nating tandaang lahat…

15. anna marie angelito - November 24, 2007

oo nga noh…thanx…ang ganda napakapositibo, sana lahat ng matatanda oomganun ang pananaw..sana pagtanda ko jganun jdin ako….walang regrets…

16. coulet - November 25, 2007

this is what you call the “positive energy”. actually, i like people who have positive attitudes. i prove to myself many many times that sucessful people are those who never give up. real people are those who do not loose courage. i like reading such stories coz it gives me strength. as a young, i’m trying to manage all the scraps in my life, i’m trying to keep my positive outlook in life. the more i say ‘i can’t do it’ definitely i can’t do it, but the more i say the i can. no matter what happens, i certainly can do it.

as i watched a documentary bout’ success, a woman who once failed, staood up and fell again, then she learned and she stand up again.. until now she’s standing up, straigth and strong. she told in an interview that what you perceive in life, is what will happen. if you visualize that you will be sucessful, you will be. you’ll be determine to work hard and take care of all the blessings that you have.

isn’t nice???

17. coulet - November 25, 2007

for me,one of the most important attitude in life is that to learn how to withdraw negative and unneccasary feelings for other people. when you forgive, be sure that you forget. anger, hatred and such are the heavy elemenst in life that block one’s success.

18. dhana hyacynth betarmos - November 25, 2007

very inspiring si lolo…siguro yung life nya was then a half perfect…how i wish ganun din ako…maybe he enjoyed his life to the fullest and he accomplished his mission and purpose in life…breathable yung kamatayan nya…hehehe
can i have a piece of his pamana?@-@

21. lea - November 26, 2007

it’s very inspiring!life will become easier and meaningful if we ha have a positive outlook in life.

22. inocencio,angela - November 26, 2007

Dear Sir Jan,
Sorry po kung ngayon lang po ito.

Sir the pamana ni lolo is very wonderful letter that inspire to go beyond limits but always remember the rules of life to be succesful in this journey. But i believe that life is full of unexpected outcomes and life cannot be planned as like a project.
keeping strong in life is all that matters. if you quit early, you cannot see what life is all about. and how beautiful to live in this world. You’re right when you say that every struggles keeps you strong and wise. And also the line that shows you cannot live in the past because it already done it cannot be changed anymore. I learn that, what you didn’t do that you should do in the past may apply to the future. Because life has no deadline of submission. And only you have the quality of life and how to manage it wisely………. thank you vow.

23. analen_b_sanchez - November 26, 2007

lolo’s pamana-a very inspiring story…a kind of story which i really like to read. after reading the article..i was fascinated and strucked because of bunches of lessons in life, which young people like me can be my “baon” along the pathways which i’m gonna encounter. [When you meet up with challenges, welcome them. They’ll leave you wiser, stronger, and more capable than you were the day before. ]
[When you make a mistake, be grateful for the things it taught you. Resolve to use that lesson to help you reach your goals. ] these lines inspires me a lot. this kind of pamana from lolo pitong, a priceless pamana which is more important than any other material things which our old fellows could give to us. thanks lolo pitong for the priceless pamana that you’ve given.

24. dave dumlao - November 27, 2007

a interesting story… a very inspiring philosophy in life…i think if every one will follow what lolo had wrote maybe all of us will achieve success in life and also have that positive outlook in our own lives..

25. Rowena B. Urmenita 3-1 - November 27, 2007

the letter of lolo pitong is a gud lesson for evrybody especially to d students like us…
it helps me more to strive harder in order to attain my goal…

26. Kajo - November 27, 2007

“realize that life is filled with surprises, but many are good ones. If you don’t keep watching for them, you’ll miss half the excitement.”

life is too short for you to focus on yourself.

-LIVING is enjoing life, be not close to the people around you. make yourself available to everyone for life is never a soloist journey.

27. cariss_magallones - November 27, 2007

It’s nice to learn something from the elders once in a while. I myself is close to my grandma and sometimes I take things not-so-seriously but when I come to think of things, I see that she’s right maybe age makes a person a whole lot wiser. ^_^

28. janine of abp1-1 - November 28, 2007

a very nice story hehe…
i think it’s the best “pamana” a lolo can give to his grandchildren,..it’s really inspiring to hear such an advice coming from a fully experienced lolo though i didn’t even have the chance to meet my lolos heheh,..yet it is true that in this blank and stony world, we’re shielded from from the knowledge of the dangers that awaits us!!! heheh

29. gregorio albario jr. mn 2-2d - November 28, 2007

a very inspiring story abt an old man that looks at all things happening to him in a positive way….
its a gud lesson for everyone of us to accept and face all the difficulties in life and to never lose hope no matter what…

30. BPS aga - November 28, 2007

This article, as I see it, teaches us 2 things.

1. that elders truly learned their lessons in life, so their learning should be part of our own learnings. Young people like us should not go around and start boasting that we knoe alot in life. we should also listen to people who has “been there”

2. that all good things starts when we “keep our eyes wide open”. We should not be narrow-minded. We should accept the things that come our way..instead of complaining about stuffs and think negatively about everything..we should keep in mind that the manner we describe things depends largely on how we view it. There are things that could not change just to please our eyes so we are the one that should adjust and see the goodness in it.

31. gregorio albario jr. mn 2-2d - November 28, 2007

a very inspiring story abt an old man who look at all things in life in a positive way…
its a gud lesson for each and everyone of us to accept and face all the difficulties in life and to never lose hope no matter what…

32. sol 4-2 - November 28, 2007

our grand parents are indeed a good example sometimes..i hope id been like that to my lolo but unfortunately i wasnt able to hav a good tym with him..but i know i am gratefull with my lola..kakainggit if you are that close to your grandparents..

33. jacq of BPS IR IV-2 - November 28, 2007

wow! very refreshing especially to someone who’s starting to feel tired of finding a way out from the labyrinth of life… ang hirap kaya magsurvive dito sa pilipinas (ang hirap kumita ng pera!!!! pero wala akong balak magtagal sa callcenter noh!!!)… pero sabi nga ni ma’am daye, “the modern concept of development is more on the process than the result itself”. Its like giving more importance on the journey than the destination itself… enjoy life!!! yun lang yon…..

34. Diana Lee Chan - November 28, 2007

Hapiness id within. Yes its true. We are accountable to every endeavor we have made. No matter how we try to striv hard to get what we wanted, may it be physical, emotioal and spiritual; we will always end up looking at HOW WE PERCIVED THINGS.

Our enthusiasm is the manifestation of how we feel inside ourselves. It never fails. HOW WE THINK AND LOOK AT THINGS WILL BE THE SAME SCALE to our own happiness.. Lolo said clearly, “The person that ends up a winner, is the one who RESOLVES TO WIN,” and we must give life everything we’ve got and life will give it all back to us.” I personall believd in this claim, thus, I personally motivate mysef with this short motto,” YOU CAN BECAUSE YOU SHOULD.” I keep this phrase every where my eyes could catch it readily, especially in my home. This inspire me to go further despite the many trials I have fronted.

35. mhe_aNNe - November 28, 2007

Living in this life without anything to share is somewhat…disgusting!!! hehehe!!(–,)

Coz everyday is really such a brand new gift to unwrap…it may be great at the end of the day or worse…answer lies on its holder….

36. Alex Sevilla - November 28, 2007

The story reminds me of our real Filipino values and culture.

First and foremost we are often advised by GREAT ELDERS.
Elders who fought hard to won the battles of life. Their experienced is often shared not just to inform but to acknowledge that trials and chakkenges are part and parcel of life… (too much for that)

The latter part of the letter (And always follow the rules. Even the little ones. When you follow the rules, life works…) reminds of the book entitled 7 habits of highly effective people. Just to share, this book mentions about following the rules of nature. That nothing is short cut. —Read this book, this change my life–thanks to the person who gave a copy to me, Job Pagsibigan.

However, I do not completely agree that we should always follow the rule—hindi naman sa pagiging rebelde, but life is boring if you’ll always go with the flow.

Anyway my stand for this is that “HISTORY IS MADE BY THOSE WHO BREAK THE RULES”

Pahabol—haba ng comment— once in a while, papipiliin tayo which is RIGHT and which is EASY. On this occasion, my answer lies on paragraph nine.

37. Alex Sevilla - November 28, 2007

Pahabol on always following the rules…

Albert Einstein, as every kid knows, was a smart guy. But as we discover when we get older, smart gets you only so far. It’s worth remembering, especially now, that what made Einstein special was his impertinence, his nonconformity, and his distaste for dogma.

38. mary joy - November 29, 2007

42. jonnel - November 29, 2007

kakainggit nmn ung bata sa story, may lolo cya na nkakabonding..hehehe..seriously, i somehow felt that when i was reading the article…..
anyway
the article is inspiring.the words of daye’s lolo are simple to understand yet deep in substance if you’ll scrutinize the values that daye’s lolo is emphasizing. i agree that life is not just reaching peaks. it is also about failing and stumbling sometimes.it’s about learning……..
as i spend my years in PUP, i learned many things in life and i started refining my character.. i have encountered many problems as well as people who gave me problems… but that doesn’t matter because i have learned to look on the brighter side of my life but did not forget to glance and solve my challenges… although i’m not a perfect individual, i’m still glad that i am not like other people who, insatead of learning from their mistakes, tend to become worse because they do not know their lapses or maybe they refuse to know it…

going back to the article.. it’s very nice sjan

43. Timothy John A. Pormarejo - November 29, 2007

its really true… the only way to win the game is to Know the Rules, follow it and presto… …..

47. cleth - November 29, 2007

Very inspirational story,……..Nakakainggit kc may isang taong nagpapaalala sau that life is colorful yet full of challeges ang heartaches.

It reminds me of all the challenges that I’ve been thru in my life, before i Ask god why I’m not like the other people that can do whatever they want to do, I ask why I always encounter different problems, minsan sinasabi ko pa nga” Wala na bang tao sa mundo at palaging ako nalang ang may mga problemang tulad nito” but now after the different painfull experiences, I realized that i’m so lucky for having those problems cause now I’m strong enough to face and to handle diffrent challnges that will come to me. Thanks for all the problems that god had given me, those problems made me a better and stronger person.

Be thankful sa lahat ng mga problemang dumarating sa buhay natin . Always believe in god and always remember that he love us………………

I considerED these things as my achievements in my life..! Im proud of all the things that I have achieved! But not to the extent that Im goin’ to brag it.. i know madami pa ko pagdadaanan.. at an early age iba na pananaw ko sa buhay..!I want to experience different things..! ayoko maging stagnant..yung tipong wla akong ginagawa.. im always on the go..! and now.. working in SHAKEY’S is another experience for me..as a Restaurant Marketing Coordinator! Masaya pero nalungkot ako.. huhuhu na miss ko tuloy lolo ko..
well, daye’s grandpa impart so much lessons to her that really help her to face the reality of life. That life must be treasured and a chance to enjoy every single day while living in it.
It is so true that we must not quit, surrender or give-up even to the darkest days of our lives for there would always be hope after it…
Sa mga taong kasama pa ang kanilang lolo, always give them the love and understanding know their worth and respect them because time comes they will leave you and you will never ever see them again smiling…

” Most important of all…..never give up!”……in everything we do, we strive for what we want to achieve…even its a matter of life and death can never hinder us in obtaining that dream….we had given all the hardships and struggles just to get that certain dream…..sa huli pa ba tau su2ko?….marami n taung snakripisyo’t pinaglaban…bibitaw pa ba tau….

…….marami pa taung pagda2anan…at hindi pa ito ang huli….kelangan laging lumaban…..just continue to dream…..libre lang ito…til d end….go!!…fight!!..go!!!

59. angela alcantara - November 30, 2007

spoken like a true lolo to a granddaughter, giving principles to live by. one has to keep in mind these lessons or “pamana’s” to be able to live life to the fullest.

60. afreel (3-1) - November 30, 2007

It is a very inspiring story..we can never rily deny the fact dat though young ones are full of energy, and ideas..old ones are full of wisdom..and these wisdom can never be discovered nor earned unless you wont experience it..

61. bodeth banlaoi - November 30, 2007

Keeping your eyes wide open! That’s the line that stuck in my memory…whew ‘ve been through hell and back… cuz i always feel na ako yung kawawa but then that certain line made me realize that i should not be thinking that way…

i have to see all the best things that life has to offer…ayun kaka emote ko tuloy i missed half the excitement! wohooooo! tama si lolo….

62. jhe - November 30, 2007

sa sobrang ganda i’m speechless, haha!

totoo naman kasi, life is not all about success, there’s always failures and stumbles in the recipe. pampasarap yun ng buhay. at tsaka, facing the unfamiliar also equates to welcoming opportunities.

wala na, yun lang, dumudugo na ilong ko…

63. mia ir 4-2 - November 30, 2007

inspiring indeed… this could really shows how the wisdom of the old one guide young people like us….

lessons ive derive from this story with a letter called “exceptional and extraordinary” :

never quite

look at the brighter side of life

believe in yourself

take life lightly

and smile… always… laugh more….

64. aBbY BPS 4-2 - November 30, 2007

eto na cguro ung favorite ko..sa lahat ng article dito..very well said..
life is short..pero madaming dapat gwin..we should not waste time…and always look on the brighter and lighter side…

65. harly - November 30, 2007

a very inspiring message…
from the start,a manifestation of a great garndfather who taught a lesson in life to his apo…
life is a time for struggle, but then life is a time for enjoyment..
realizaing that we , i should give importance to every lesson in life that my lolos and lolas taught to me…

66. mArIaNNe 4-2 - November 30, 2007

i remember my lolo..i’m his favorite apo.though he never left me any thoughts or letter like that one, the impression he left in the family really makes him a good grandfather, father and a husband.my mom would tell us that he was a responsible father.and that is how we, grandchildren percieved him to be.

67. remylyn - December 1, 2007

im in a bad mood today! i got a bad start! whaaaaaaa………..

thank God, for all things work together for our good. it was just moment ago when i found out that there was task like this, i was not informed…….

however, even he most evil thing can be turned into a good one. this article speaks about what i ought to do, NEVER GIVE UP! LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES! DO NOT SETTLE LONG IN THE VALLEY! LEARN FROM TH PAST AND MOVE ON! OH……IT IS ALWAYS EASIER THAN DONE!…..ANYWAY, JUST LIKE WHAT LOLO SAID, WELCOME THE TRIALS. FACE THEM……

I WILL LIFT MY EYES TO THE MAKER OF THE MOUNTAINS I CAN’T CLIMB
I WILL LIFT MY EYES TO THE CLMER OF THEOCEANS RAGING WILD
I WILL LIFT MY EYES TO THE HEALER OF HE HURT I HOLD INSIDE
I WILL LIFT MY EYES, LIFT MY EYES……LIFT MY EYES…….

68. jerry - December 1, 2007

69. Laryssa - December 1, 2007

nakaka-inspire ung cnabi ni Lolo!

ganun nsmsn tslsgs sng buhay eh..

kailangan ka munang madapa bago ka matutong tumayo..

sa buhay natin dapat marunong ka makipag-sapalaran, dahil kung hindi, pano mo matututunan ang mga bagay na gusto mo pang malaman?

tulad nga ng sabi ni Lolo, leave the past den climb the mountain and enjoy the view!

huwaw..

70. Clarisse ABP1-1 - December 1, 2007

ahhmmmm!!!!!! I’m just happy for the letter that he had
made. The moral lesson here is to LIVED with EXPERIENCE, appreciate things, and to be a living conscious individual. We are living in the indterminate world just to experience the process of changing and also i think just for a purpose. But every living has a challenge behind and we need to fight and to be strong and last have faith in GOD.

71. khem - December 1, 2007

nakakatouch nman poh..naalala q 2loy na miz ung lolo q..anyway he passed away 2 years ago..ganyan din xa smen..

nyweiz, lolo pitong’s words of wisdom had enlightened me..sobra pah yan sa material things na pwedeng ipamana ng isang lolo sa kanyang apo..

72. Timothy ABP - December 2, 2007

parang parehas na ginawa sa aken nyan ni lolo Isaac tapos nung august namatay na sya..

ang tanging pamana nya ibigay ko lahat ng buhay koh para mahanap ko ang tagumpay…-_-..

pray as if everyhting depended upon GOD , and work as if everything depended upon man,,

73. lilibeth - December 2, 2007

That pamana will be the best pamana for me.
Some people will just ask for the material things
than the inspirational words….

Sometimes we have to listen to the elders for
us to get moral lessons and to be able to become
better person…

In this case, Lolo Pitong gave Daye a very beautiful
pamana that she could treasure for the rest of her life !

74. leuterio, Loraine Ann - December 2, 2007

77. anonymous_06 - December 18, 2007

lolo’s pamana is very nice, for me as a student, we must have a good relationship with others, give the best you can, show someone who down you that you are not deserved to be down, have a fighting spirit, be confident, believe in your own talent, fight for the right, learn more than you have in yourself, and the last is, TRUST YOURSELF….
to be a strong leader you must start at yourself….

78. lolo pitong's seed - January 6, 2008

words indeed are very powerful..with what lolo pitong shared or wrote to his granddaughter is something to be treasured and if daye understood what his lolo was implying, i think daye would be a happy and somewhat-contented person..

116. jinky casanova - February 14, 2008

we’ve learned from them, their experiences, even from their mistakes, aun!

117. noreen - February 15, 2008

ahm…lessons in life .., hehehe!!!

life sucks..
it really does..

4 years of stay in the university, in PUP
4 years of earning a degree..
and in the making life has taught me something..
the ability to do the wrong things
as opposed to what you want..
that’s what life is..
that’s the real maturity
there’s no degree for that..
and there’s no time-specification…

but we can have it everywhere..
even outside PUP
maybe in our so-called “journey”

i never received any letter from my grannies..
i didn’t even have the chance to see them face-to-face..
but the kind of life we have
is the best lesson they ever inherited me.

118. ghy - February 15, 2008

—I think a lot of it has to do with how a person looks at things. I call it ‘keeping your eyes wide open.’—

i agree… everything starts with how a person looks at his life… it starts with how he will manage his own self,, and then his intimate surroundings,, and then the outside world…

life is indeed a compilation of lessons…

129. Jess pol. sci. - November 27, 2008

Life is a lesson plan. it always use to see how our life improve.. past teaches us to deal for tomorrow, life can be meaningful if we can share it and be an inspiration to others…

i remember my itay..
i hope he’s still alive,,,

133. joy - November 27, 2008

I once watched a documentary film about the laws of attraction. This article is somehow related to that. I also believe that the environment reacts to a person’s perspective. And one more thing, it would be more regretful if we weren’t able to do what we should have do when we’re in that position. In simplier terms, if there’s an opportunity, might as well grab it than regret the day you should have accept the opportunity.

134. James Remojo BSME I-2 - March 29, 2009

napaka-inspiring talaga nun!

…learn from your mistakes…

137. kristine perez bsme 1-2 - March 30, 2009

like what i’ve said on my speech during my highschool, grab all the opportunities that come into your life. it’s better to xperience it than regret it.. meaning when you grab that but you failed, at least you try it with matching lessons pa. but if not you’ll regret it ‘coz you know you can find sumting from it but you just become one good coward!!

138. gilbert ancheta(bsme 1-2) - March 30, 2009

ok na man un ah!! hindi xa gold more that pa .. kahit hindi ako si daye parang pinamanahan na rin ako ni lolo pitong!
