“There is a difference between education and experience. Education is what you get from reading the small print. Experience is what you get from not reading it!
But isn’t it true that great learning comes from both education and experience? Let me tell you a parable:A young school teacher had a dream that an angel appeared to him and said, “You will be given a child who will grow up to become a world leader. How will you prepare her so that she will realize her intelligence, grow in confidence, develop both her assertiveness and sensitivity, be open-minded, yet strong in character? In short, what kind of education will you provide that she can become one of the world’s truly GREAT leaders?”
The young teacher awoke in a cold sweat. It had never occurred to him before—any ONE of his present or future students could be the person described in his dream. Was he preparing them to rise to ANY POSITION to which they may aspire? He thought, ‘How might my teaching change if I KNEW that one of my students were this person?’ He gradually began to formulate a plan in his mind.
This student would need experience as well as instruction. She would need to know how to solve problems of various kinds. She would need to grow in character as well as knowledge. She would need self-assurance as well as the ability to listen well and work with others. She would need to understand and appreciate the past, yet feel optimistic about the future. She would need to know the value of lifelong learning in order to keep a curious and active mind. She would need to grow in understanding of others and become a student of the spirit. She would need to set high standards for herself and learn self discipline, yet she would also need love and encouragement, that she might be filled with love and goodness.
His teaching changed. Every young person who walked through his classroom became, for him, a future world leader. He saw each one, not as they were, but as they could be. He expected the best from his students, yet tempered it with compassion. He taught each one as if the future of the world depended on his instruction. After many years, a woman he knew rose to a position of world prominence. He realized that she must surely have been the girl described in his dream. Only she was not one of his students, but rather his daughter. For of all the various teachers in her life, her father was the best.
I’ve heard it said that “Children are living messages we send to a time and place we will never see.” But this isn’t simply a parable about an unnamed school teacher. It is a parable about you and me — whether or not we are parents or even teachers. And the story, OUR story, actually begins like this:“You will be given a child who will grow up to become….” You finish the sentence. If not a world leader, then a superb father? An excellent teacher? A gifted healer? An innovative problem solver? An inspiring artist? A generous philanthropist?
Where and how you will encounter this child is a mystery. But believe that one child’s future may depend upon influence only you can provide, and something remarkable will happen. For no young person will ever be ordinary to you again. And you will never be the same.
its nice to be the first to comment!….hehehe
“You will be given a child who will grow up to become…
….it’s hard…
kahit sarili ko hindi ko mapicture kung ano ung magi2ng ako in the future…
all things are blurred….
‘by hearing you will forget…
by seeing you will remember…
and only by doing you will learn…”
bakit ko nilagay yan…wla lng…hehehe
eto ung unang pumasok sa isip ko nung bibasa ko ung story….
(mhaba n xa diva?!) this is a matter of inspiring others and being inspired by them too…
gusto kong katusan ung teacher… i dont know it just that he wouldnt realize all those kung hindi pa dumating ung panaginip na iyon sa kanya… na he begin to do those action for a purpose of making that child to be great leader… a purpose rendered to one person explicitly…but i also wanted to salute, admire etc this teacher kase he never doubt or even never taken for granted that dream… ng dahil dun na notice niya that every child walking out of his classroom could be a great leader…
in the end of the story i found out that every one learns even the teacher himself…
hmmm… *nosebleed*
every one of us contributes to a person’s character.
our influences can make or break someone.
ergo, use our influence wisely.
(anu raw?!)
…hmmm…ang hirap…once i’m done reading it, i can’t utter any word…however i believe that it will be a great achievement for a teacher seeing his/her student successful in hi/her respective field,…same thing with the parent and child relationship…your student/ child’s future will only depends on how you influenced and left them an unforgettable marks on thier lives, it doesn’t matter whether it’s good or bad, what matter is how those remarkable things helped them to became what they are now…
ang hirap naman…. words coming out from our mouth can help a person mold his \ her life to become a successful person… hmm… inspiring!!!! wahehehe gud luck satin!!!! words of wisdom from others dian oh,, needed,, wahehehe!!!!
ahhhhhmmmmmm, ang hirap ifigure it out.sumakit ang brain q ngdugo yta…hehehe!tama k magno, mahirap sbhn f ano ang mging future ng mgng anak mo or pti future ntn…kc maraming mga substance (atom, molecule?ekw b 2?)n pwede humadlang…dlwang bgy lng yn if mgppapek2 k or hindi…
one of my simple joy in life is to be a part of one’s life and be a part of a change in him/her. it’s fun looking to a brand new individual with a much better personality. learning from your experiences and influencing others through the learnings you’ve got from it is as good as being a teacher who patiently training his student to be a successful man…
each of us should be a role model in every
little thing that we do no matter what is our
positon in life. and this could only be achieved
if we know how discipline ourselves.
ang sakit isipin na wala man lang akong naicontribute sa mga susunod na leaders, para kong minaso dun ah…pero sana sa minujtong it mmaging ganun mdin ako hindi man ganun pero matutunan ko sana,…saludo ako sa gurong un…tulad nyo in sya at ni sir egot, adun ng burning desire sa pagtuturo, sir thank you sa pag share ng kwentong to ngayon ko lalong naramdaman na kailangan kong ipagpasalamat sa lahat ng guro…sila ang humuhubog ng tulad namin pasaway….thanx
….im also asking myself of wat wud i becum in the future….but then it answered me…i dont know….
…i just hoped that wat wud i becum in the future wud not just fulfill myself as a person but also to help others…
if i have given a child to raise up in the future……… first of all i gonna prepare all the foundation of a strong family should have. Like a house, a strong job/livelihood, a family planning, i gonna need to understand how to raise a child on the various stages. then when we have a child iwant her to see a loving and peaceful family where there is harmony in that home. were household rules are obidiently followed and the blessing of almighty GOD will be always be there. Then , she can have education with a full support on her parents and she can choose her course in whatever she wants. and i dont tolerate pagiging tamad and dependend in her character. iwant her to see how life works in reality and help other in the best way she can. and if she’s grown up i want her to have her stands on her life and she must fight for it whatever the outcome is…….
ang ganda ng comment ni michael solomon!!

Y? bcoz if u hav’nt have an exellent parent dat will guide u in growing up u won’t attain dat degree of college and exellency…
hehe,..
how could i plan or foresee wathever my future children would be, if i don’t even know what my life would be!!?? hehe,..
first thing to do is to face this unrelenting present before thinking of future’s plans!!
at this point in my life everything i want to achieve and how to accomplish it is as clear as crystal, and this would not be possible if not for the help of a very good teacher like you sir jan… I know we don’t really like each other that much, but one thing is for sure…. YOU TAUGHT ME A LOT OF THINGS… not just about politics but life in general… SALAMAT PO SIR!!!
The bible says, “Train up a child the way he should be, and he will not depart fom it.” This verse, applies to the story. We’ll never know what the child it would be untill he grew up and be a man. The only thing we can care about is submit ourselves to weaning the child, according to what GOD taught us to do(may it be our own children or not). Walk in His words and we will not go astray. If we try to wean the children all by ourselves, we might get our hands dirty for the truth and complexity of human nature is beyond our control. The truth speaks as we try to look back and behind us. …many parents committed mistakes as they try to put their rules into their children.

sir where do you get these articles? i think some of them were written by you…
a teacher’s child… as i was reading this article i started reminiscing my experiences and learnings with my most favorite and best mentors from grade 1 to 4th yr college… i am very thankful that they have taken their parts in molding the person whom i became now… without our teachers and professors, there would also be no ninoy aquino, franklin roosevelt, dwight eissenhower, jovito salonga, john kennedy and many other great men and women who molded the world we live today,,,… but we should not think that it’s the exclusive job of teachers to help mold the present and future generation……… it’s all our responsibility to make the world safe for humanity (sounds familliar hehehe)… we are all mentors in our own ways… the dynamism never stop with the result or outcome of our teachers’s students because the students they would produce would continue the legacy that they made…. just like how socrates taught plato, plato taught aristotle and aristotle taught alexander the great……….
part of our stage in my primary school shouts this message..
“be proud you are a teacher, the future depends on you”
at first, i knew that it was really talking of a typical teacher but then, as i grow up i realize that it is also for each of us, not only the teachers/academician. in the near future we will become father, mother, professionals – all of these have one thing in common and its influence. the parents influence the child and the professional influence his subordinates, colleagues & even his bosses only if he knows how to, hehehe,, (ano nga daw yun)
nwei, i know one who is like the teacher in the story (regardless of that angel in the story) & i think you know him to… Prof YOU-KNOW-WHO is the same person as the teacher in this parable…
viva senior!!!!
nosebleed=) hehe…
a very inspiring parable… As i read the story, para ko tuloy naalala si S’jan at many of our briliant professors in pup.. Siguro nga, ganun talaga yun, they all have diffrent metods of teaching bec they believe that one way or another, theyre students will discover their buried potentials to make them the best leaders of the world… It will start today, it will bloom tommorow… Hope all the studnts would realize that they are apprentices of their masters and are expected to be the best tommorow….
s’jan how does the angel looked like?.. . it was ur story eh’
but definitely not the part with a child’ hehe.. .
thanks! would mean a lot for a prof and a friend like you.. .
I remember my professor who influenced me alot of things, my professor who taught me to realized that i can make such things that for me is impossible to make…..palage akong natatakot kc baka mali yong mga ginagawa ko for him that’s why naeencourage ako parati pag sya yong professor ko kc alam ko sa kabila ng paghihigpit…… andun ung pagmamahal nya samen bilang estudyante, sa kanya ko lang nakita yong concern and he always make sure that we experience different things in every sem that we have..
You know who’s that professor? well that is you sir Jan, like you in the article you want us to be a good person in the future because you care for us db?
I salute you sir, naging makulay ang buhay ko sa polsci dahil sau sir…..thanks!!!!
at this point in time.. if i would not be a lawyer, i prefer to be a teacher.. to become a teacher you need to sacrifice a lot of things.. that’s why teaching is a noble profession.. we should appreciate the good things are teachers give us.. and also for our first teachers who are our parents, we should put into good all the sacrifices they encountering just to give us proper education..
ndi ko po pala nakukwento..my mom was once a teacher before cia naging Accounting Clerk III..
i’m taking this story literally..ndi lang xa nanay ko.she’s also my tutor..she’s teaching m not just my assignments but also lessons in life..as i grow older..(too bad i’m not getting any taller..haha..)i’m seeing the real picture of life she’s describing to me wen i was a kid..the best part of it is that she already taught me that the best way to survive in the real world is to have the right path,be involved with the right things and meet the right persons..i’m glad i did one..i’ve already found the right persons..ny BPS 4-2 Family..(tribute pala sa IR..hehe)
seriously speaking..a person will learn a lot if he/she’s got an open mind..and also a big heart..lessons learned.c’mon..
when i read the story, i remember my father telling me that “when you achieve something, it reflects how your parents or teachers influence you.” it may sound common but i felt a sudden urge for me to listen to them as they already experience many things in life. i realize that WHEN YOU BECOME A LEADER, YOU’RE NOT ONLY MAKING YOURSELF A LEADER BUT YOU ARE MAKING YOUR PARENTS, YOUR TEACHERS (MENTORS OR TRAINORS) AND EVERYBODY THAT SURROUNDS YOU LEADERS TOO… when you step up, you’re pushing them to move up too. the passing of ideas are very important to make thing happen…
I mean PASSING OF IDEAS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.
Thank you sir for being a second parent to us… Our future is in you wehehehehehe… You mold us, and we, your students being clay, either we accept or does reject the way you mold us… it depend on how we view it… Wow potter’s hand? But always remember that…
A good figure doesn’t only come from a good kind of clay but also by a good sculpture… Have a blessed heart everyone…
tama nga nmn there’s a difference bet. education and exprience!
wait n lng nten kng mgiging sucessful ung life ntn in the future d b, kng may pinag aralan nmn t u cguro nmn hndi ipagdadmot s atin ang gndang knbukasan!
education and experience? that’s wat i learned from a nice teacher like you, you just don’t know how happy i am every time you share things while while touching my heart i would not be me without your kind help…THANK YOU PO!
thanks sa mga naging mentor ko, madami akong natutunan sa buhai..! cguro minsan (este lage) pasaway ako, pero surely acknowledge ko naman ung mga tinuturo saken..!
everyone is a product of education and experience. it is how a person applies his education and/or his experience that would make the difference.
a real good post…
yeah… the teacher is right in changing his teaching ways…
and we should all look the person not on what they are but on how they could be.
i remember my high school algebra teacher. nakipagkwentuhan sya sa akin once, nung 3rd year high school pa, a year after ko sya maging teacher. he asked how am i and what course will i take sa college. sabi ko, wala pa po ako naiisip, siguro after graduation ko na iisipin. napagalitan nya ko. wala daw ba kong plano sa buhay ko? he said i must have a picture in my mind of what i really want to be and to have in my life. tapos nagbigay sya ng example ng “life plan”, actually, yun yung sa kanya. dapat daw magset din ako ng ganun. sounds corny, but this teacher made me cry kasi hindi lang sya sobrang galing magturo sa acads, he’s also always there to give advice and uplift his students’ spirit.
to all the teachers like him, i salute you!
hmmm..
tnx po for being a good teacher/professor to us..not just in academics..but to all th things that you taught us po..
god bless sir jan…

education and experience?looking for one in a single package? well, that spells J A N A R G Y T O L E N T I N O….
i would like to grab this chance to extend to you sir the appreciation i have to have you as my professor… you taught as so much… beyond education… beyong experience… thank you po…. godbless!
my mother is my mentor, my first teacher..
i know qng gaano ka devoted ang isang teacher sa profession nai…
as tym goes by, mraming teacher qng nki2lala, ibat iabng way on how they mold every individual’s mind as well as our formation as a true person…
from dis moment of tym, i met a person who i think serving not just a prof/but a friend who always there anytym..
thanks for being you…
Indeed what the people we came in contact to may determine what we will become after the interaction. Lucky for us to meet people who are not only giving us knowledge and experience- two in one(hala kape ba ‘to?) experiencing at the same time learning, san ka pa?
The lesson here i think is more than meets the eye, we have start giving the best we have and treating everyone the way we should be treating them, at the very best that we could. We don’t need an angel to appear to us to realize the possibilities, ne? That’s what I think so.. Wahahah!
hehe,..
how could i plan or foresee wathever my future children would be, if i don’t even know what my life would be!!??
yun ngah if you would go to maarried lyf .. you guys decide kung ano ang future plans sa magiging ank nio di b?
yun lng short comment ehehe.,.,
READING THE PARABLE. THE NAME SIR JAN REPEATEDLY COMES INTO MY MIND, the strict and rule-oriented professor yet compassionate, loving and inspiring professor!
this professor of mine is my is not just a professor, better called an educator, a father, a friend and a CHALLENGER!
sir jan, thank you so much!
I DON’T CARE WHAT THEY THINK ABOUT ME, IT’S ALRIGHT
I DON’T CARE WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT ME, IT’S ALRIGHT
SIR JAN, YOU MEAN SO MUCH TO MY LIFE!
Haaay… ganun kea ang naicp ni nanay nung isilang kami…
Tsk.. tsk.. tsk..
By the way, my mother is also a teacher, and I believed that she is the kind who offers her best her students to live fully and be great person for the future.
The question is… kung hindi ba nagpakita ung anghel eh marerealize ba niya ung mga bagay na un?
Experience without education is nothing, yan po eh batay lamang sa inyong abang lingkod. Hehehehe
grabe ang hirap nun ha! kahit ako cguro pag nanaginip ng ganun mapapaisip tlaga aquh! still tlagang todo prepare ang teacher dun sa parable atleast she has a good intention!
still both education and experience are imporatant pareho tyong matututo sa dalawang yan!
\m/peace out
pano ko masasabi ung future nung bata kung ung sakin eh hindi ko pa din alam, diba?
incase na mangyari un.. hmm.. isipin nya muna ung gagawin nya ngayon (present) bago ung future!!
Well……even though education and experience are different. It both help us to support our daily living. education is a continuos process of learning while experience are we everyday doing. Therefore in both ways they have also the commonality.
For me, education and experience is not
worth it if you will not appreciate it’s lessons…
Each one of us will be a better person if we will
value each time of our lives. Don’t waste time doing
your lived experience especially if it’s just a stupid thing.
About the sentence in the story,
“You wii be given a child who will grow up to become……
Ahhmm… i think, “jst a person who learns from his or her
mistakes and have the courage to make changes in a sense
that the world could also bebefit”….

sb nga ni socrates (ata..) “the greatness of the students comes from the caliver of the teacher”.. haha, nshare ko lang
experience is one of the teachers where thoughts and ideas of you and others are learned and lived by. i think, what one should do as a teacher to someone, is mold a person with good ideas andhunble thoughts.
we are teacher in our own little way..when you taught a child how to eat candy s an example, nagkkaiba lng s lalim at s scope, pitty those who aim to teach other greatest things…bcoz greatest things comes 4m simple ones.
ang kabataan talaga ang pag-asa ng bayan… dapat maging magandang halimbawa sa kanya…sabi nga sa proverbs 22:6, ” Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
everyone has the ability to be a great person.. there are various factors which contribute to attain such greatness like our environment, the people we are dealing with, our experiences, etc..
however, we must bear in mind that at the end of the day, it is still our responsibilty to develop our own selves.. watever decisions we make and watever actions we take, creates us…
“You will be given a child who will grow up to become… perhaps a world changer, history maker.” what do you think about that. thats my mindset toward the people under me.. haha! sikreto!
having those two makes one ready to the battle we called life, with absence of any of those makes one a weak soldier
tma nmn tlga..
theres a diff. bet. education and experince..
iba ung ndudulot nito s life nten..

nice one!!!
i hope teachers will have the chance to read this post and ponder on it!!!
san nga naging totoo n lg to..at sana napapanaginipan to n mga teachers…
so that they will have this thing as an urging factor for them to strive harder…
dapat naman talaga gnun tau sa buhay…
we should always put in mind that in life what matters is nto what a person is but what he can be….
and for me.,the real good thing about this is he listen.,,he thinks and he puts it into action.,
Parents and Children relationship can be compare with that of bow and arrow. The bow is the parents holding the arrow – their children. If there is not much energy put in the bow and it is not aimed properly, then the arrow will head nowhere. But with proper care and attention, the children will reached far, like the arrow hitting the bull’s eye
we are educated by our experiences.
..yup.. education and experience.. a gud tandem.. lhat nman tau teachers db? teachers of life.. kse we also teach lesson.. we make advices..
..napaicip ako dun knna.. anung klaceng child nga ba out of me…?/ wla ako maicip .. basta iL do wat is required..! i will rear up a child n alm kong mkpagcocontribute s mundo.. one hu can participate in solving the world’s problems..and not the one hu will be the problem itself.. kung anu man ung field n gusto nya pasukin.. its his/her decision.. as a parent.. guide lng ako.. !!
the message of the parable goes like this, “we cannot give what we do not have”, so if we want a great and positive influence on every child and young people in this world we must first possess it in ourself, we need to start it in our self, in our own foundation!
i keep on pressing the keys of the keyboard that i didnt notice its past eleven and i still have to have two rides to attend my 1pm class..hehehhe!!!
this would be the last…but i will surely visit this blog when chances would give me ample time to explore it and do so..
influence?that’s leadership..we are own leaders in our own ways..
we can sometimes control it..most of the time we cannot…
but we should also watch ourselves.. on how others shaped us to be what we are now..
just like I..
there are times that i feel as though Ive lost something
but the truth is i have everything..
times when i feel as though i do not know who i am
but in reality
i am myself…
hahahahaYYYY!!!
basta…carpe diem to everyone(“,)
ive read this story twice na..pero kinilabutan p rin aq.
its nice..really inspiring..
lets not be satisfied kung anu meron tau..i mean,if we can do better,or if we can do the best,(not only for oursevlves but as well as for others) then go..
you will be given a child who will grow up to become..
hirap..
cguro i’ll support whatever it is that he wants to be..
send him to good school and let him experience the world..
ahahahahaha.. if i was d teacher in this s2ry.. mggng frends q lhat ng s2dents q.. so in d future qng may isa man lang sa knla na mggng powerful meron agd aq backer.. ahahaha.. seriously sana lhat ng teachers pktaan ng angel na 2.. para lht aucn ang pag22ro nla
education inside the 4 walls is not enough,, we have to learn by experience… as s’Jan said, experience is the best teacher…
~BinmaR™
so sir, what do you think of us,, what do you think we would be in the future? hehe…
you will be given a child to become a good daughter/son of our God..
that’s first thing comes into my mind…
I have once read this story on my e-mail and yup, it’s a nice story to ponder on. I don’t want to be a teacher not because it would give me a lot of headache, or it has a low salary and such, but because I’m afraid that my students would turn out bad. I’m afraid that I’m not qualified as a teacher because a teacher, for me, takes a lot of responsibility and I might fail with that big responsibility. That’s why I have a high respect to all teachers even if I’m not extracting any lessons from them, I still regard them as a teacher , a highly respected teacher.
‘ a teacher affects eternity. u’ll never know where his/her influence ends…’
‘…experience is the best teacher.’
quotable quotes from people who lived way before we were born.
everything can’t be learned just by pondering over books the whole day. some essential things in life can be learned through experience. books can’t tell you how to get over a heart ache, or teach you how to persevere. teachers can teach you who did what, when and where.experience focuses more on aesthetics.how and why questions can be answered,,gradually.
sir kayo ba ung teacher?? anu ba ang ginagawa nyo samen? pra saken malakim talaga magagaea nag experience..
mnsn ms mdlng m22 dhl s experience, ms mkkrelate k!
