Leadership skills are based on leadership behaviour. Skills alone do not make leaders – style and behaviour do. If you are interested in leadership training and development – start with leadership behaviour. Leadership is mostly about behaviour, especially towards others. People who strive for these things generally come to be regarded and respected as a leader by their people:
- Integrity – the most important requirement; without it everything else is for nothing.
- Being very grown-up – never getting emotional with people – no shouting or ranting, even if you feel very upset or angry.
- Leading by example – always be seen to be working harder and more determinedly than anyone else.
- Help alongside your people when they need it.
- Fairness – treat everyone equally and on merit.
- Be firm and clear in dealing with bad or unethical behaviour.
- Listen to and really understand people, and show them that you understand (this doesn’t mean you have to agree with everyone – understanding is different to agreeing).
- Always take the responsibility and blame for your people’s mistakes.
- Always give your people the credit for your successes.
- Never self-promote.
- Back up and support your people.
- Be decisive, but be seen to be making fair and balanced decisions.
- Ask for people’s views, but remain neutral and objective.
- Be honest but sensitive in the way that gives bad news or criticism.
- Always do what you say you will do – keep your promises.
- Work hard to become expert at what you do technically, and at understanding your people’s technical abilities and challenges.
- Encourage your people to grow, learn and take on as much as they want to, at a pace they can handle.
- Always accentuate the positive (say ‘do it like this’, not ‘don’t do it like that’).
- Smile and encourage others to be happy and enjoy themselves.
- Relax, and give your people and yourself time to get to know and respect each other.
- Take notes and keep good records.
- Plan and prioritise.
- Manage your time well and help others to do so too.
- Involve your people in your thinking and especially in managing change.
- Read good books, and take advice from good people, to help develop your own understanding of yourself, and particularly of other people’s weaknesses (some of the best books on leadership are not about business at all – they are about people who triumph over adversity).
- Achieve the company tasks and objectives, but never at the cost of your integrity or the trust of your people.
hmmmn….. all (absolutely) of the features, characteristics of a leader that I have in mind were listed in here. I cant add anything!? bansai!!!
ahmm.. i think it is advisable to know all the good leadership behaviour of a good leader before you lead as a new manager..
..hehehe..kaylangan ko tong tandaan lahat!..as a future leader, makakatulong to saken kung iaaply ko to sa buhay ko..
virtues and skills should go together to become a good leader.it is qouted in the saying “it takes two to tango” something like that. well, the article serves as an eye opener for future managers like us, for management is our chosen field.
2nd comment:
Wow, this part of the blog really caught my attention…
this is because im a management student. I do believe that skills can do nothing without the style and behavior that a man MUST HAVE.
being a leader is not about authority alone, but this is also the CONSIDERATION and RESPECT with every move you do..
i think every management student should read this article for them to know the right attitude as fututre manager. i agree that skills alone do not makes leaders because we must also consider the right behavior in dealing with our subordinates.
i think all of these are important to be a leader. lalo na ung sinabi dito na manage your time well because i noticed na sa mga leaders natin ang nagkukulang sa area na ito. maganda rin kung nakikinig ka sa mga comments and suggestions ng mga leader na sinundan mo dahil mas alam na nila ang pasikot-sikot sa organization na ngayon ay pinatatakbo mo.
i think your right on what you said that “skills alone do not make leaders-style and behaviour do” because some of the richest people in this planet became who they are right now because they conveyed the right attitude/behaviour.GO!
All of these things truly informed me alot about what should I do if I became a manager. But it will takes me a long span of time to acqiure all such things.
how i wish all leaders have this charateristics…
especially me,a management students..
being a future manager,
i need to practice all of this leadership skills..

it’s true that behaviour makes up a true and good leader..skills are useless if you don’t know how to use it well.
these guidelines are helpful to become an effective manager. skills are more easily acquired than the right the right behaviour to be good in the profession. these will help me personally since i’m a management student. this list ought to be read by the managers/leaders in the world.
ohhhh….what a great topic….those guidelines will really help me a lot especially when the time comes that I am already a manager…hehe
sana lahat ng leader my ganyang attitude….
being a leader is very chellenging, but this challenges will surely lead us to success! very inspiring po ung mga nilagay nyu!
okei mga dudes, self-check po tau!!!

very inspiring ung mga attitudes! sana laht ng leaders ay ganito!
…hmmm…i constantly agree to that…however, it’s quite difficult to have it all at once…but then, facing the fact that be a certified manager this generation you must possess all those x-factors, ‘coz skills are useless if you don’t know how to mingle righteously to other people,,..
aSpiring leaDerS!! cHeck diS oUt.. hEhehe.. pEaCe oUt!! =D

These will be a nice guideline for leaders! And I’m hoping I can find somebody who’s following these set of guidelines when I conquer the outside world of PUP in the next years ahead or maybe in the near future i myself could use it.
ansaya cguro ng bansa natin kung ang lahat
ng leader natin ay meron ganyang mga attitude. hindi lahat
ng bagay nakukuha ng dahgil lang sa influence.
tama eh!!!ung iba kc,npapasunod ang tao dhil sa tkot..but a true leader inspires..its not just because your smart,or have a very talented skills.its how you treat people, and how you make them feel they’re part of ur every triumph.
as a management student, talagang importante yung mga guidelines nayan, actually, kahit sa iba applicable pa rin yan. READ BOOKS , syempre by reading books marami kang matutunan, then yung knowledga na yun i-share mo sa iba…. maganda rin yung part na , wag mong ibaling yung sisi sa iba, always take the responsibility and blame…….. characteristics of a good leder

wheeww..yan ang tips…
It’s really tough to be a leader. It requires sel-control, wit and charisma. Being a leader is not an overnight achievement..and even a “salamat po doktor” can’t transform someone to become a leader. It requires a good character build up..that should start as early as childhood life because in that stage..character foundation is being developed.
I couldn’t help thinking about humpty dumpty after reading the leadrship behaviour. The rhyme said,”Humpty dumpty sat on a great wall,Humpty dumpty had a great fall, all the king’s horses and all the king’s men; couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty back together again.”
A leader is a good leader if he does not affect himself of the harsh interventions. The Leader needs focus not on himself but the people around him. Perhaps, leaders who have invested interpersonal skills cannot breakout of their present framework. Stretching his brand will definitely give a good reputation to his associates and followers.
makakatulong yun lahat…
baka maging Leader ako someday….haha.. kaya lng malabo
